Abstract

We derive an expression for the theoretical minimum detectable power at the output of a fiber Raman preamplified digital optical receiver that includes the effect of a GaAs MESFET front-end amplifier and the receiver circuitry. Analytical expression for the various sources of noise are presented. Numerical examples of bit error rate characteristics are discussed In importance with high bit rate systems.<>
