Abstract

The advent of research in superconductors opened new opportunities for their applications in different domains like electrical machines, power system, etc. Application of superconductors in transformers is described in this paper, with special emphasis on design considerations. Past studies and experimental data have been considered for providing a summarized view of the design challenges and requirements for superconducting transformers. Comparison between superconducting and conventional transformers has been made which proves the economic and technical advantages of superconducting transformers over conventional copper-based transformers.
