Relationships between tree size and mean water level in dunal swamp forests of the lower north coast of New South Wales

Abstract

This paper presents the results of a study which measured the depth of water-table and/r surface water in several swamp forests in the Port Stephens are Lake Macquarie areas over a period of ten months. Highly significant negative correlations were found between mean water level and size of Melaleuca quinquenervia. Hypotheses are suggested to explain large numbers of fallen and/or dead trees at some of the sites sampled.
