Treatment Approaches to Sexual Problems with Dual Diagnosis Clients

Abstract

A dual diagnosis client is a person with both a mental disorder and a developmental disability. Treatment of sexual problems in dual diagnosis clients has involved behavioral programming, counseling, social skills training and sex education. Case examples are presented to illustrate the application of these treatment modalities. Further research is advocated since the problems of dual diagnosis clients have not been sufficiently addressed. Clinicians must also be aware of oppressive social and institutional factors since they often impinge upon the clinical picture.
